Our Work in Action

Field stories from across South Africa — how ADRA turns principles into practical help for people in crisis.

Water delivery — Brandfort and Winburg

ADRA Water is Life containers loaded in the back of a pickup truck ready for delivery

When communities in Brandfort and Winburg lost reliable access to water, ADRA South Africa delivered water directly to affected residents.

Water is the most basic of necessities. Without it, families cannot drink safely, cook, wash, keep their homes clean or protect their children's health. The daily burden of finding water falls hardest on women and children.

For a household without reliable water, a delivery means a safer source of drinking water, the ability to maintain hygiene, reduced health risk, relief from the daily search for water, and restored dignity. The intervention illustrates a principle at the core of our work: sometimes humanitarian assistance begins by meeting the most basic need first.

Clothing for flood-affected families

Floods in the Eastern Cape left families without homes, furniture, clothing and other essentials. ADRA South Africa distributed clothing to affected households.

For people who have lost everything, clothing is not simply a material donation. It is an immediate step toward dignity and normality — particularly for children, older people and low-income families with no means to replace what was lost.

Providing practical assistance carries a message that matters as much as the goods themselves: You have not been forgotten. Your needs matter. Your dignity matters.

Clothing for fire-affected residents — Dunoon

Community members and ADRA staff gathered around a registration table under a branded gazebo

Fires in densely populated informal settlements spread within minutes and destroy homes, bedding, documents, food, school materials and clothing. After community fires in Dunoon, ADRA South Africa distributed clothing to affected residents.

Speed matters in these emergencies. The response helped families meet immediate needs while they began to rebuild — compassion in action, rapid response and a visible sign of solidarity with a vulnerable community.

Solidarity Fund food relief

Through the Solidarity Fund and the Department of Social Development, ADRA South Africa delivered food security assistance to more than 18,000 people in the Free State and Eastern Cape, alongside a COVID-19 food response with Old Mutual reaching 2,500 people and a two-year Disaster Relief Centre in the Free State.

Large-scale food relief depends on trusted partnerships, careful logistics and presence on the ground — so families receive support that is timely, dignified and accountable.

What these projects say about us

  • We respond to immediate needs. When communities face water shortages, floods or fires, we provide practical assistance that addresses what is urgent.
  • We focus on dignity. Water, clothing and food may seem simple, but they have an enormous impact on people whose lives have been disrupted.
  • We work alongside communities. Response is most effective when communities are treated as partners and their priorities are understood.

Relief → Recovery → Resilience → Development

Our work can be summarised as a progression:

  • Relief — respond to immediate humanitarian needs.
  • Recovery — help people regain stability after a disaster.
  • Resilience — strengthen people’s ability to withstand future crises.
  • Development — address underlying vulnerabilities and create opportunities for lasting improvement.
