Health and Wellbeing

For more than a decade, ADRA South Africa has built community resilience to the health and psychosocial impacts of HIV and AIDS.

ADRA South Africa community health programme

Why health matters

Strong health and wellbeing protect dignity, keep families together and help communities recover from crisis. When stigma falls and care is within reach, people living with HIV — and those around them — can live with hope and purpose.

Our work crosses gender, age, ethnic and faith lines so support reaches people where they already gather: in congregations, support groups, cooperatives and local networks.

What we focus on

Our health portfolio spans prevention, care and community resilience:

  • Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) — safe water, sanitation and hygiene in emergency and development settings
  • Nutrition — school and community feeding and support for malnourished children
  • HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and non-communicable diseases — prevention, destigmatisation and community support
  • Psychosocial support — care for people affected by disaster, displacement and loss

How we work

Practical approaches strengthen both clinical pathways and the social fabric that keeps people in care.

Community counselling

A training-of-trainers model equips community counsellors to support people living with HIV — reaching more than 60,000 people through trusted local relationships.

Faith leaders against stigma

We have trained more than 300 pastors and religious leaders in a ministry of inclusive compassion, helping dismantle stigma in faith communities.

Support groups

More than 120 community and faith-based support groups give people living with HIV a place to belong, share and stay connected to care.

Livelihoods linked to health

More than 20 cooperatives with income-generating activities linked to markets help households strengthen both health and economic resilience.
